Artmill Gallery and Framing Centre

Richard studied painting at Central School in London 1968-71 (working on large abstract colour field paintings) before moving to Plymouth in 1976.

Since then he finds images by looking around the environment, especially urban regeneration, and events such as the installation of the Messenger sculpture outside Plymouth Theatre Royal – with a definite graphic approach. Bold Indian ink line features in very big drawings, as well as high contract charcoal.

Demolition and construction regularly interest him, from schemes in Plymouth to the destruction of homes in the recent Syrian war. Recently he has developed a series based on the Dazzle concepts of WW1 shipping, where strong black and white pattern and shape break up identifiable form.
