WENDY McBRIDE
Wendy completed a B.A. in English, Art and Philosophy from Exeter University in 1982, then taught Art and Creative Writing for a while. Since then painting has gradually taken over.
"My work is inspired by an emotional response to the natural world, particularly the wild and watery places of the West Country. I work both inside and out, walking, taking notes and photos to use as a reference back in the studio. I am chasing the memory of these encounters, the sense of place, feeling and atmosphere of the time. Current work is pastel on board. I tend, once I’ve started, to follow intuitively what the marks seem to dictate, rubbing, scratching, scumbling etc. to explore the different possibilities of the medium I’m using. Degas was an early love, and Turner, particularly at his most abstract. Of later painters I look at those who seem to combine semi abstract painterly qualities. Joan Eardley, Babara Rae, Kurt Jackson, Judy Buxton. Many others.”
